Professor Emeritus at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering

Additional information

Heinz Jäckel has been Full Professor of Analog Electronics at the Electronics Laboratory of the ETH Zurich since June 1993. He also heads the research group "High Speed and Analog Electronics".

Prof. Jäckel, a citizen of Basel, was born on 7 July 1947. He studied at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the ETH Zurich, where he received his doctorate in 1979 with a dissertation on photon statistics and the dynamic behavior of semiconductor lasers. In 1980 he joined IBM where he held scientific and management positions for 13 years in the research laboratories of IBM in Rüschlikon, Switzerland, and Yorktown Heights, USA. During this time he carried out research projects in the field of device and circuit design for the superconductive Josephson Junction Computer, GaAs-Mesfet logic and memory ICs and optoelectronics, especially short wave power semiconductor lasers and ultrafast diode lasers and photodetectors. The research activities of his group at ETH concentrate on the following topics: development and characterization of ultrafast transistors and circuits for multi-gigabit electronics, IC design of RF circuits for mobile communication, CMOS-ASICs for sensory technology as well as photonic devices and integrated optical circuits for data transmission, particularly for all optical signal processing at terabit/s data rates.

Heinz Jäckel is a member of the IEEE as well as representative of the head of the departement ITET and the delegate for academic affairs.
