Schülerinnen*tag 2023

Each year, around 80 young women* from high schools from all over Switzerland take part in the Schülerinnen*tag, organized by the student organisation LIMES. During this all-day event, the participants do a campus tour, visit a couple of labs, and receive first-hand information about the study programmes in electrical and mechanical engineering.

For the eleventh time, LIMES, the Women's Commission of the Academic Mechanical and Electrical Engineers' Association, invited interested young women to the so-called "Schülerinnen*tag" at ETH Zurich. The young women* visited the Departments of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) and Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET) on 24 November 2023.

Inge Herrmann, Professor of Nanoparticular Systems at D-MAVT, and Gabriela Hug, Professor of Electrical Power Transmission at D-ITET, kicked off the event with insights into their studies, their own careers and their research. According to Herrmann, mechanical engineering is a degree programme whose graduates are in high demand from industry. Most of them received job offers before completing their studies. Gabriela Hug emphasised that she had successfully studied at ETH despite her focus on languages at grammar school. It was important to her to do applied maths and she found the diversity of information technology and electrical engineering extremely exciting.

A wide range of opportunities

ETH alumnae Joy Stekhoven and Phyllis Hofmann talked about their experiences during their studies. Joy Stekhoven is now working as a data analyst at SBB after completing her Master's degree at D-ITET. D-MAVT graduate Phyllis Hofmann works at the ETH spin-off Scewo. Following a brief overview of student life, including professional associations and Master's degree programmes, the tour continued after the lunch break with visits to various laboratories in both departments.

The programme included the Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL), the Robotic Systems Lab (RSL), the Institute of Mechanical Systems (IMES), the Engineering Design and Computing Laboratory (EDAC), the Optical Materials Engineering Laboratory (OMEL), the Laboratory of Biosensors and Bioelectronics (LBB), the Institute of Dynamic Systems and Control (IDSC) as well as the Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Group (CMR), and the High Voltage Laboratory.

At the end of the day, the students were able to chat with the LIMES students and each other over a delicious cake buffet.
