How much energy do blockchains need?

Prof. Roger Wattenhofer, head of the Distributed Computing Group (DISCO) at D-ITET, and his team developed the Cascade asynchronous proof-of-stake blockchain architecture. He estimates that the Proof-of-Work (PoW) mechanism, used for Bitcoin, is responsible for about 99.99% of blockchain energy consumption.
