The Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW) has elected Prof. Gabriela Hug, head of the Power Systems Laboratory (PSL), and Prof. Jürg Leuthold, head of the Institute of Electromagnetic Fields (IEF) as new members.

In our interview, Ender Konukoglu, professor at the Computer Vision Lab (CVL), talks about his research at the intersection of medicine and engineering and about the challenges that arise when linking these two forward-looking fields.

The research group of Prof. Janos Vörös together with the startup Hemetron are co-developing an electrochemically enhanced rapid test for COVID-19, providing improved accuracy while retaining all the advantages of a rapid test: speed, mobility, price efficiency and ease of use.

Nils Wistoff from the Integrated Systems Laboratory has received the Best paper award of the Test and Dependability Track at the 2021 DATE (Design, Automation, and Test in Europe) Conference. The paper is a collaborative work between ETH Zurich, Università di Bologna, UNSW Australia and Data61, CSIRO.

Frodo is not only a brave hobbit of the Shire, but a smart urinary bladder volume monitor that can bring down the use of catheter insertions and hence reduce the incidence of urinary tract infections and other associated complications. It has been conceived, designed and developed due to a successful collaboration among the D-ITET PBL Center (Dr. Michele Magno), D-ITET IIS (Prof. Luca Benini) and D-HEST (Prof. Simone Schürle).  

Prof. Johann Kolar, head of the Power Electronic Systems Laboratory (PES), has been elected to the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE) "for contributions to power-electronic technologies, multiobjective design optimization, education, and technology transfer to industry." Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer.
