New paper on Nature Communications: Neuromorphic dendritic architecture with RRAM for efficient temporal processing with delays
An article in Nature Communications published by the Institute of Neuroinformatic, UZH/ETH Zurich (Filippo Moro, Tristan Torchet, Yiğit Demirağ, Giacomo Indiveri and Melika Payvand) and CEA-LETI in France features DenRAM, the first hardware realization of spiking neural network with dendritic architecture. It utilizes memristive devices to implement both delay and weight parameters, enhancing low-power signal processing with reduced memory use.
Kaveh Razavi receives Jochen Lietke Young Researcher Award
Prof. Kaveh Razavi, head of the Computer Security Group, has received the Jochen Lietke Young Researcher Award at EuroSys. This award was created in 2014 by ACM EuroSys to reward junior European researchers who have demonstrated exceptional creativity and innovation in systems research, broadly construed.
An architect of nano power plants: SNSF portrait of Mickaël Perrin
Prof. Mickaël Perrin, group leader at Empa and assistant professor of quantum electronics, uses graphene ribbons to build nanoscale power plants that convert waste heat from electrical devices into electricity. He and his research are featured in a portrait by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Best Paper Award for the Dinner Seating Problem
The DISCO group's "Stable Dinner Party Seating Arrangements" wins the best paper award at WINE 2023. The paper studies avoiding conflict when seating your guests at the dining table.
Best Paper Award for Institute of Neuroinformatics
Junren Chen, doctoral student at the Institute of Neuroinformatics (INI), won the Best Paper Award at the 2023 30th IEEE International Conference on Electronics, Circuits and Systems (ICECS) in collaboration with colleagues at the School of Integrated Circuits, Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Reinhard Wiesmayr receives NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship
Reinhard Wiesmayr, doctoral student in the Integrated Information Processing (IIP) Group of Prof. Christoph Studer, received a prestigious NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship for his research towards intelligent and adaptive 5G and 6G wireless systems that build on machine learning.
Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards HS 2023
On 13 December 2023, the best assistants were awarded the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award HS 2023. The winners are Janick Matter (Lineare Algebra), Silvan Krebs (Informatik II), and Markus Lacher (Netzwerke & Schaltungen). Congratulations!
Nako Nakatsuka receives prestigious Prix Zonta
Dr. Nako Nakatsuka, currently senior scientist at the Laboratory of Biosensors and Bioelectronics, was awarded with the prestigious Prix Zonta on 10 November. The Prix Zonta, endowed with CHF 30,000, symbolises the commitment to the outstanding position of women in science.
New study: Influence of mobile phone radiation on sperm quality
A study by the University of Geneva and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute in Basel has investigated whether mobile phone radiation harms sperm quality in Swiss recruits. The study does not provide a clear answer, but the results tend to give an overall all-clear. Prof Jürg Leuthold provides additional information.
PBL Goes to the Moon: ESA Idea Project to Revolutionize Lunar Exploration with UWB Localization for Swarm of Robots
The D-ITET Center for Project-Based Learning (PBL) was successfully accepted to receive an ESA Idea project grant for the groundbreaking initiative "Energy-aware infrastructure-free localization for robotic swarms on lunar south pole missions."
New at D-ITET: Ueli Koch joins as educational developer
As of 1 September 2023, Ueli Koch has joined D-ITET as educational devoloper and lecturer. In his function, he will be the contact person in the department for issues in the area of teaching.

Prof. Luca Benini has been honored with the Dandelion Award 2023. The award recognises professors for their outstanding commitment to promoting entrepreneurship at ETH Zurich and beyond.
SRF Radio: A look into the quantum dots laboratory
The SRF science editorial team discusses the Nobel Prizes in medicine, physics and chemistry. In a visit to the lab of Prof. Vanessa Wood, they learn more about the key technology of quantum dots, for which Moungi Bawendi from MIT received the Nobel prize 2023.

Information days 2023
On this year's Information Days on 6 and 7 September, D-ITET was present with exciting exhibits and demos as well as interesting presentations giving high-school students a valuable insight into the department's study programmes.
ETH medal for Daniël Trujillo
Daniël Trujillo, a recently graduated master student from the COMSEC group of Prof. Kaveh Razavi, has won an ETH medal for his thesis entitled "Racing Against the Decoder: Leaking Arbitrary Memory with Phantom Speculation and Training in Transient Execution".
