Wolfgang Fichtner was Full Professor of Electronics and Head of the Integrated Systems Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) since September 1985.  A total of 115 graduate students have received their PhD under his supervision. From October 1999 to October 2004, he acted as Chairman of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering Department at ETH.  Between 1991 and 1994, he acted as Co-director of the Swiss National Priority Program LESIT for power electronics, systems, and information technology, and between 1996 and 1996 he directed the National Priority Program MINAST for micro- and nanosystem technology.

Wolfgang Fichtner is Austrian and Swiss Citizen. He was born in Austria in 1951, and he received the M.S. degree in physics and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Vienna, in 1974 and 1978, respectively. From 1979 through 1985, he worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ.

In 1993, he founded ISE Integrated Systems Engineering AG, a company in the field of Technology CAD, as one of the first spin-off companies of ETH.  Between 2004 and 2007, he took a leave of absence from ETH, taking a senior executive position at a leading US company.

Wolfgang Fichtner is a Fellow of the IEEE (1990) and member of the Swiss and Austrian National Academies of Engineering.  In 2000, he received the IEEE Andrew S. Grove Field Award for his contributions to computational electronics.
