Referent/in Prof. Dr. Tomoaki Yamada, Department of Materials, Physics and Energy Engineering, Nagoya University, Japan, Abstract: Piezoelectricity is the conversion function between electrical and mechanical energies. Among various materials showing piezoelectricity, ferroelectrics are known to show large piezoelectric response. Therefore, small piezoelectric energy-harvesters have been intensively developed by integrating ferroelectric films into Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS). However, it has been experimentally and theoretically shown that the piezoelectric constant of ferroelectric films is often significantly lower than that of bulk crystals as the film is mechanically clamped by the substrate. Here, the 1-dimensional (1D) nano-structures, so-called nanorods, can offer exceeding properties as such a clamping effect can be ignored. Furthermore, 1D nano-structures may show a unique domain structure due to its anisotropic electrostatic boundary condition, which can greatly affect its piezoelectric response.In this presentation, we show the enhanced piezoelectric response in ferroelectric Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 nanorods and these unique domain structures.
